Cope Whitehouse, investigating the source of the water of Lake Moeris (Lake Karoun, Qarun), discovered an ancient canal system that paralleled the Nile River for several hundred kilometers, a system reverently referred to in Egypt down to today as Bahr Youseff (or `Joseph’s Canal’). In ancient times, it was known as Mer-Wer (the Great Canal) Built at the time of Amenemhat III, who was also known as Moeris (similar to Mer-Wer).

William Flinders Petrie expedition to Egypt – the Fayoum, spending the best part of ten years in and around the Fayoum, joined by archaeologist Norris Ansley excavating the pyramid at Hawara and trying to locate the fabled Labyrinth described by Herodotus.
