Justin Swift is the companion of the murdered victim Thomas Denisen. He lives in Copenhagen Denmark, becoming involved in the story by living next door to Einar Pontoppidan, an elderly man in his nineties who through tragic circumstances has recently passed away. In his will he leaves in his care a painting, The Hangman Of The Gallows, and a small bequest for Justin to return the painting to the mysterious Anna.
Away from home, in the company of the group under the command of Conrad Baron, Justin regrets becoming involved in the visit to Sweden, setting into motion events that will not only lead to the murder of Thomas Denisen, but also the survival of the group.
